A California atmosphere and like-minded menu has come into Antigua Guatemala in the form of Super Natural Jugo Cafe.

Cantaloupe green walls, an homage to bamboo, oddly curated ceiling-mounted surf boards and an artillery set of juicers and blenders have replaced the glittery bead store that inhabited the space for a few years.  Where are Yolkobsens going to get their beaded frog shaped key chains now?

The 6th Calle west is the happy location of this new juice and good-for-you food outlet. For a small place this little cafe boasts a pretty ambitious menu.  Included are a variety of vegetable-hugging favorites, like the caribbean burrito, flashing plantain, or the Guacamole burrito, with avocado flattering beans and cheese.  There is a selection of sandwiches and they, like the burritos, rely on eggs, beans or cheese for protein.  This is not your bacon and egg breakfast cantina.

But the real divas at Super Natural Jugo Cafe are the smoothies and organic juices.  Smoothies range from: Coffee Buzz, a coffee-infused liquid alarm clock; and Pineapple Protein, a fruit and protein coterie for the morning or any time.  Juices that give your bad habits a good talking-to include:  Love Your Liver, with beets, parsley, carrots and apple; and Serious Detox, cucumber, apple, ginger and celery.

We sampled the breakfast burrito, that came with a small fruit bowl, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee. This was one of the best bargain breakfasts in town, we concluded.  Potatoes, guacamole, cheese and two scrambled eggs create a hardy mosaic served in a classic wrap.  Cost of the breakfast comes in at less than you pay for one ride on Toronto’s public transit system.

Food preparation, blender magic, decor and friendly atmosphere are brought to these Guatemala walls by the California owners.  This couple, like so many gringos, simply fell in love with Antigua Guatemala and wanted to build a home and a way to make a living here.  We came to visit during their first week at this game and they were still smoothing out the bumps of a new enterprise, but loving it.  And making their customers feel a home.
